i was wondering, ive been running the new beta 2 build for a while now, and it seems that every time i start it up, my ram usage ends up getting over 600+ after the computer finishes booting. i have 1 gig of ram on my system, and it is a bit inconvenient because if i try to run anything else, it quickly gets up to around 800 and that causes a lot of lag. i was just wondering if this was normal for others, and if there maybe was a way to resolve this. i am currently on a toshiba qosmio with 2 ghz centrino, 1 gig of ram, vista on one hd, xp media center on the other, and a nvidia geforce go 6600. i am using all of my drivers off of windows update, and i am not using aero (cant seem to get it to work anyways). any help or feedback would be appreciated.

ram usage question
Hello,
My system stays pretty consistant at about using 1-1.1 GB, based on what the task manager says. However, this isn't really the amount of physical memory that your computer is using (the calculations that task manager uses don't take into account certain ways windows can share memory between programs).
For example, when my task manager says I am using 1,100 GB, I am really only using about 600 MB :)
The way I understand it, alot of core system services will grab alot of memory if there is alot of memory available, but if you start opening more applications they will relinquish that extra memory.
Also, microsoft is just starting the work to make windows vista perform well, and memory optimizations haven't been done in full force, as this is beta software, so you can expect the final release to perform better and use less memory out of the box. :)
If you want an accurate count of the amount of physical memory your computer is using, you can:
1) Add the CPU Meter gadget to your sidebar
2) In Control Panel -> System and Maintenance -> Administrative Tools, double-click Performance Diagnostic Console.

Eh, by 1,100 GB I of course meant 1,100 MB...
The newsreader changed it on me, I swear ;)

The Vista Beta2 is Vista Ultimate and comes with a lot of stuff, only half of which you'll probably need. I managed to shave of about 200MB of the memory-usage after boot. Under Administrative Tools you'll find Services, sort the list after status and look through the list of Started. If you know a little you can find a couple that you don't need (look carefully at the dependencies-tab), if you know your windows well you can find lots that you don't need.
However a word of warning: disable the wrong thing and thing start to not work anymore and strange problems can occur.
